GESTALT THERAPY APPROACH TO OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDERS
ONLINE WORKSHOP FOR PROFESSIONALS
DESCRIPTION
We propose an exploration of obsessive-compulsive disorder from a Gestalt therapy perspective. In the workshop we propose theoretical frames, practical experiences, supervision and personal work with the aim to present a comprehensive overview on this disorder and its psychotherapeutic treatment.
The clinical perspective we present is the result of a research we have done for many years and we published in the book ‘Obsessive-compulsive experiences: a Gestalt therapy perspective’ (2019), edited among others by G. Francesetti.
In the light of the Gestalt theory of perception, the obsessive– compulsive symptom is framed as a creative adjustment able to protect the client from much worse suffering, in a situation in which the bodily sensorial ground is permeated with terror.
OCD is a frequent and serious disorder that can make life very difficult for its sufferers and the people close to them. Around 2–3% of the adult population suffers from this disorder.
Theoretical contents:
• phenomenological and descriptive approach to OCD,
• figure/background dynamic in OCD (understood in the light of perceptive processes and the emergence of the self),
• locating the disorder in particular in relation to the neurotic and psychotic levels of organisation (differential diagnosis),
• a Gestalt therapy analysis of the experience giving meaning to the creative adjustment of obsession–compulsion,
• the relationship between this suffering and the contemporary social context
• main characteristics of the OCD field emerging in the therapy,
• specific support and treatment’s phases.
