Julianne Appel-Opper - The language of the living body (ONLINE)

Psychosomatic Phenomenology:
How do bodies speak in their movements, gestures and in their physical symptoms?
The language of the living body

Online workshop lead by Julianne Appel-Opper

THIS WORKSHOP IS DEDICATED TO PSYCHOTHERAPISTS WHO HAS AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH WORKING WITH CLIENTS

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The weekend webinar aims at providing a broad introduction to physical presentations in psychotherapy. Using a combination of theoretical input and experiential processes, we will explore the phenomenology of psychosomatic symptoms. The use of kinesthetic language will guide us to a further exploration of embodied communications. Participants will get opportunities to look into own embodied gestalten and somatising tendencies.

The relationship between attachment trauma and physical symptoms will be explored and discussed. The biological-psychological-social model of illness will be introduced and illustrated with clinical material. We will focus on chronic pain and how to find creative ways to open up embodied communications further.

On the Sunday, we will work within a supervisory format to explore and discuss these processes further. Possible interventions and experiments will be introduced, explored and discussed in small groups.

Using her experience of many years of clinical practice and teaching, Julianne wants to offer a safe and respectful space for exercises, experiential process, live supervisions and demonstrations, small group work, sharing in pairs together with theory input and a critical discussion and reflection of various concepts of physical presentations in the therapeutic space.

LEADER

Julianne Appel-Opper, psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer has worked over 30 years. For 12 years, she lived and worked in different countries and is now in private practice in Berlin. Her clinical experiences in Psychosomatic Clinics at the start of her clinical work in 1988, motivated her to research interbodily processes: what we say without words and what we see without looking. She has developed the approach Relational Living Body Psychotherapy which she has taught, presented internationally and written about in 27 publications, including the British Gestalt Journal, USA Body Psychotherapy Journal, the Confer program on Embodied Approaches to Psychotherapy with a lecture and a filmed demonstration of Embodied Supervision, see www.confer.uk.com and recently the International Journal of Body Psychotherapy, see www.ibpj.org. Situated within an Integrative Gestalt and Relational Psychoanalytic frame, this way of working introduces embodied interventions and experiments as new ways to open up embodied communications in the therapeutic space. The approach aims at implicit bodily communications and how these unspoken embodied stories can be open up for further exploration.

Since 2001 she has worked internationally as a visiting tutor at several psychotherapy institutes. From 2004-2015 she was visiting tutor/viva examiner for the Integrative Department at Metanoia, London. Her collaborations with international training programs include the Norwegian Gestaltinstitut, the Polish Szkoleniagestalt Group, the Institut de Développement du Thérapeute in Paris and Confer, London.
